The Kiss, by Gustav Klimt, is one of the most famous paintings of its time. Painted in 1907-08, the painting is of two lovers encircled in a golden background. With her flaming red hair and pale skin, the woman stands with her cheek turned upward anticipating a kiss from her lover. The painting is full of passion and almost feels as if it were alive.
Born near Vienna, Austria, in 1862, Klimt received a scholarship to an art school in his early teens. It was here that he polished his skills as an artist. After leaving school, he began taking jobs painting portraits and other works on commission. Over time, he became upset with the way the paying public viewed his talent, so he stopped taking commissions. Shortly after, Klimt started his own art movement. Known as the Vienna Secession, it would change the world of art in Austria. The Vienna Secession focused its attention on finding young, original artists and giving them a chance to explore and exhibit their craft. Klimt also worked on bringing artists and architects from foreign countries to help enrich the art scene in Vienna.
In the world of art, Klimt may have been held in high esteem, but privately, his character was less than admirable. It was known that Klimt viewed females as only a little better than objects. It is also said that he fathered up to 17 children with many of the models he used for his paintings. Like many artists, Klimt wasn’t honored as much in life as he has been since his death. His works may have been created a century ago, but their timeless beauty will live on forever.
Chicken Big!
Every day villagers of Lang Con Ca make their way to the market. As they travel along the road in this area of the central highlands of Vietnam, they see the great, concrete…chicken.
Many years ago, as the story goes, a young woman wanted to marry a man from a neighboring village. Now, at this point, the story is told in two different ways. Some say that the mans family demanded a dowry of a rare chicken. Others insist it was her own chief who refused to let her marry unless she brought him a chicken with nine spurs. Either way, her fiancé couldnt find one, so she went out to the forests to find this chicken. Sadly, the woman met her death during her quest. The statue is seen as a tribute to her devotion and love.
Following the Vietnam War, many Vietnamese settled in Lang Con Ca alongside the indigenous hill people, the Kho. The government erected the massive, concrete chicken as a lasting monument in this area in order to unite the two groups. However, common opinion asserts that the governments true motive for the gift was to encourage the Kho to make the area their permanent home. Traditionally slash-and-burn farmers, the nomadic Kho were blamed for destroying much of the forests of Vietnam.
With a unique history and an abundance of natural beauty, Vietnam is becoming a tourist attraction for those looking for somewhere out of the ordinary. Though not the Eiffel Tower or the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the great chicken is a monument worth checking out.
