FIND A MASTER
第四章 拜师学艺
The Monkey King drifted on the sea with a raft for months, then he arrived the southern land.
美猴王登上木筏，在海上漂漂荡荡，数月后，顺风漂到了南赡部洲。
He left the raft and jumped ashore. Seeing people fishing, hunting wild geese, digging clams and panning for salt on the beach, he approached and made faces at people.
他扔了木筏，跳上岸来。见海边有人捕鱼、打雁、挖蛤、淘盐，于是走近了冲人做鬼脸。
People thought the monster was coming and were scared to run away.
人们以为妖怪来了，吓得四处奔逃。
The Monkey King caught a slower runner and robbed him of his clothes. He put it on, waddling, waddling, felt fun to wear peoples clothes.
美猴王便抓住一个跑得慢的人，抢了他的衣服，学人穿在身上，摇摇摆摆，不亦乐乎。
He pretended to be a man, crossed the towns and the markets, learned peoples words and manners. He nodded, waved and bowed...learned everything like a person.
他装成人的样子，穿州过府，在集市上学人说话，学人礼仪，点头、摆手、作揖…样样学得人模人样。
The southern life was comfortable, but he came to realize that everyone was living for fame or money.
南方生活虽好，可是他渐渐发现，世人都是为名为利之徒。
He came here in search of immortals, but he searched for eight or nine years, none of the people here knew how to live forever.
他本是为了寻仙而来，可寻了八九年之久，竟然没有一个会长生不老的。
As the poem saying:
What can stop the struggling for fame and wealth? Early to rise and late to bed, the life is never free.
Riding a donkey and thinking of a horse, being a minister and desiring to be the prince, people are never satisfied.
正如诗曰：
争名夺利几时休？早起迟眠不自由。
骑着驴骡思骏马，官居宰相望王侯。
Whats the meaning of this boring life? Its better to go overseas and continue to look for immortals.
这样的俗世生活又有什么意思呢？不如去海外继续寻访神仙。
Thinking of this, the Monkey King took on the raft again, sailed to further places.
想到这里，美猴王又登上木筏，漂洋过海，往更远的海外漂去。
Several months later, he drifted to the western land.
数月之后，木筏漂到了西牛贺洲。
There were high mountains and dense forests, with birds and insects singing, full of fairy atmosphere.
只见此处高山秀丽，树林幽深，鸟啼虫鸣，仙气环绕。
A woodcutter told him that there was a Sanxing Cave in the Fangcun Mountain. In the cave there was an old immortal named Subodhi, who was one of the ten disciples of the Buddha.
一个樵夫告诉他，这里有座方寸山，山中有个三星洞，洞中有个老神仙，须菩提祖师，乃是佛的十大弟子之一。
The Monkey King found the cave according to the woodcutters direction, but the entrance of the cave was closed.
猴王按照樵夫的指示找到了山洞，但是山洞的入口是关着的。
He dared not knocking at the door but jumped into the pine trees, ate pine cones and played alone.
他不敢敲门，而是自己跳上松树，摘松果吃，独自玩耍去了。
After a while, the door of the cave opened suddenly. A little fairy came out and asked loudly, Who is fooling around here?
过了一会儿，洞门忽然开了，走出来一个仙童，高声问道：“什么人在这儿胡闹？”
Im not fooling around. The Monkey King jumped down from the tree and said politely, Dear fairy, Im here to learn the art of immortality.
“没有胡闹。”猴王赶紧从树上跳下来，躬身道：“仙童，弟子是来寻仙修行的。”
You came to study, didnt you? Said the fairy, My master said that a student was coming and asked me to open the door. Come in with me, then.
仙童道：“果然是来修行的？我家师父叫我出来开门，说外面有个修行的来了。那你随我进来吧。”
The Monkey King quickly put his clothes in order, respectfully followed the fairy into the cave.
猴王赶紧把衣服整理好，恭恭敬敬地随仙童进了洞府。
They walked to the hall and found the Subodhi sitting on the platform, with thirty immortals standing in perfect order on both sides, looked very solemn.
走到瑶台下，见须菩提祖师端坐在台上，两边三十个小仙侍整整齐齐站着，十分庄重。
Seeing this, the Monkey King knelt down, saying, Master, master! I sincerely come here to study.
猴王一见，马上跪下磕头，口中连连喊着：“师父，师父！弟子诚心修道，诚心修道。”
Where are you from? Said the Subodhi, Tell me your name before you worship.
祖师道：“你是哪方人氏，且说说姓甚名谁，再拜。”
The Monkey King replied, Im from the Waterfall Cave, which is in the Flower and Fruit Mountain of the eastern land.
猴王道：“弟子乃东胜神洲傲来国花果山水帘洞人士。”
Get out! The Subodhi suddenly got angry, You are lying. The Flower and Fruit Mountain is far from here, separated by two seas and the southern land. How can you get here?
“赶出去！”祖师忽然生气了，“撒谎狡诈之徒。花果山与这里相隔两重大海，还有一座南瞻部洲，你怎么到得了？”
The Monkey King replied hurriedly, I have traveled across the seas and the southern land for more than ten years to find this place.
猴王慌忙答道：“弟子漂洋过海，找了有十数个年头，方才访到这里。”
The Subodhi said, Fine, you could gradually come here. Whats your name and who are your parents?
祖师道：“既然是逐渐访来也就罢了，你叫什么？父母是谁？”
The Monkey King replied, I have no name and no parents.
猴王答道：“我没有名字，也没有父母。”
No parents, are you born in a tree? The Subodhi was a little surprised.
“无父无母，难道是树上生的？”祖师感到有些惊讶了。
The Monkey King scratched his head and said slowly, I was not born in a tree, but in a stone.
猴王挠挠头，慢慢说：“我虽然不是树上生的，却是石头生的。”
Then the Monkey King told the story of his birth and his adventure in the Flower and Fruit Mountain.
于是，猴王把它出生的过程，以及在花果山上的奇遇，都一一讲与祖师听了。
So you were born of heaven and earth. The Subodhi was pleased with this, and he said, Get up and let me see how you walk.
祖师听完暗暗欣喜，道：“这么说，却是天地生成的，你起来走走我看。”
The Monkey King jumped up, waddling, waddling, walked around.
猴王跳起来，左拐右拐的，走了两遍。
You look like a nut-eating monkey, Ill take a name from yourself. Said the Subodhi, laughing, Lets remove the beast attributes from the word SUN and leave the human characteristics. You are no longer a monkey, but a man, with the surname SUN.
祖师笑道：“你看上去像个吃松果的猢狲，我就在你身上取个姓氏。狲字去了兽旁，孙字，儿男也。你不再是猢狲，而是男子了，就姓孙吧。”
Hearing this the Monkey King was excited and immediately said, Good name! Good name! Thank you, Master. Since you have given me a surname, why not give me a full name.
猴王听说，满心欢喜，马上磕头道：“好！好！好！多谢师父，既然有姓了，再赐个名字吧。”
The Subodhi said, I will give you a Buddhist name, Wukong, according to the order of generations here. Would you like it?
祖师道：“按辈分，排到悟字，给你起个法名叫悟空，好吗？”
Great! Great! The Monkey King said cheerfully: From now on, My name is Sun Wukong!
“好！好！好！”猴王欢喜道：“从今天起，我就叫孙悟空了！”
As it is:
People have no name when they first came to the world. Since they have a name, their life begins.
New creatures would like to break the old rules, a monkey would like to live a human life, only when they fully understand the truth of life.
正是：
鸿蒙初辟原无姓，打破顽空须悟空。
